Call for Action:
Government, development partners, donor, NGOs, professional societies, and midwives welcome to the celebration of the International Day of the Midwife 2011! Some of you have never been to an event such as this. For some of you this is your first time out of your village. For others of you this is your first celebration with a big gathering of midwives.

Over a dozen countries are represented in this hall, and all of us are here because of midwives. Midwives! Each of you is a leader and you have shown the world that the way to reach Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 is through midwifery care. Every time and everywhere there is a pregnant woman you are there, dedicated to ensure that no women or child die from preventable pregnancy related complications and this is why we honor you today.
