ONGOING PROJECT

Mentorship Program

Afghan Midwives Association (AMA) is a national non-for-profit membership-based association and the leading professional body for Afghan midwives. The AMA brings midwives together to create a collective voice for strengthening midwifery in Afghanistan. The AMA was formed in 2004 under the leadership of Ms Pashtoon Azfar and a group of 15 midwives when midwifery was revolutionized and recognized as an independent profession in Afghanistan. Soon after the establishment, the AMA was recognized legally with 80 members in 2005, and now, it is known as one of the strongest and largest women-led professional associations in Afghanistan, with solid governance and more than 3500 members from 34 provinces. The AMA has been an active member of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) since 2005.

AMA is advocating for competent and empowered midwives and working towards a resilient midwifery workforce for the future to ensure the highest quality midwifery care is provided to all women, children and their families across Afghanistan.
